Decade in Review | 2012 of 2019
I will be combing through the photo archives from the last ten years to highlight how my decade has gone. Ideally I will be able to select a photo from each month of each year of the past decade. I will try to post a year every couple days. For the most part they will either be related to my growth as a photographer or be related to some significant event in my life (or both). And yes I do realize that starting in January 2009 and going to December 2019 will technically be 11 years, but more is better, right? And there was that 2009 vs 2019 challenge thing that’s been going around the internet so the numbers stuck. Anyhow, I present to you: 2012.
January 2012
This was a photo for one of my projects in my installation art class. The professor for this class was also the photography teacher and she described the photo as “very sensual”. Little did she know that this was a last second photo I did the night before with only a desk lamp as a light source.
February 2012
Only two kinds of people visited the abandoned Pullman Yard in Atlanta—taggers and photographers. It was such a cool place to visit and document the space as it gets filled with unique wall art. Apparently this space is up for redevelopment which would be good for the area, but hopefully they manage to keep and incorporate the street art into the space.
March 2012
One of my favorite places to visit was the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. It provides a very serene and calming atmosphere. My favorite spot was the bench in front of the beluga whale exhibit. It’s so mesmerizing that I actually forgot to take photos of them.
April 2012
Many schools host a 5K run around campus event, but not at Georgia Tech. We instead have a Pi Mile run because we’re awesome like that. Photographing the event required a lot of running and cutting through campus to get in position before the runners arrive.
June 2012
This was a photo of Ashton Eaton during the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene. Prior to the pole vault, he stumbled in the discus with an 8th place finish. However, this 1st place performance on the pole vault was enough to hold off the competition and this photo pretty much sums up his emotions in that moment of bouncing back and eventually breaking the world record.
August 2012
This was my first trip to Europe and it started with the 2012 Olympics in London! The first event I went to was a basketball match the day after I arrived. I was so jetlagged that I slept through most of one of the 2 games I saw that day.
August 2012
Interlakken, Switzerland. Such a tranquil and beautiful place. I would move here to live if I could afford it. A cup of Starbucks coffee was $9!
August 2012
I ended my Euro Trip in Germany. This was the Church of the Sacred Heart in Munich. This church had a very simple box within a box within a box scheme but it was very effective in creating a space of worship.
September 2012
The start of a new era with grad school at the University of Oregon! I have officially moved back to the PNW. One of my friends from Georgia Tech also decided to attend UO and it was fun getting to show her around some of the sights around this part of the country.
October 2012
Class trip up to Seattle was a lot of fun. It allowed our class to get to bond and know each other a bit more especially since we haven’t met everyone in other studio groups yet. Stopping by the Seattle Library by Rem Koolhaas is a must for any architectural trip.
November 2012
The typical post-review vibe—just a bunch of exhausted people hanging around talking. I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by a lot of great people during my architecture school years.
December 2012
Helping my friend capture his proposal was a lot of fun. We spent a night trying to come up with a plan. Didn’t go 100% as planned as far as specific setup and location and timing, but it went 100% as planned for the part that mattered most—he asked and she said yes!
